Tetsuya’s Restaurant is located in the centre of Sydney at 529 Kent Street. Chef Tetsuya Wakuda refurbished this heritage-listed site, with influences of traditional Japanese-inspired style, to create a serene dining enclave in the city.
Tetsuya’s serves a degustation menu, based on the Japanese philosophy of using natural seasonal flavours, enhanced by classic French technique. Within the restaurant, chef Tetsuya Wakuda has designed his own on-site “test kitchen”. This personalised kitchen enables him to create the constantly evolving and inspiring dishes on which he has built his esteemed international reputation.
Tetsuya’s offers one of Sydney’s most comprehensive wine lists and our sommeliers will, upon request, match the dishes with wine available by the glass. Tetsuya’s is fully licensed, and does not permit BYO.
Tetsuya Wakuda OAM grew up in the Japanese town of Hamamatsu in the Shizuoka Prefecture. With a limited knowledge of English, Tetsuya arrived in Australia at the age of twenty-two, never imagining he would one day be embraced as one of the nation’s favourite chefs.
Landing in Sydney in 1982 with nothing more than a small suitcase and a love of food, Tetsuya found his very first job as a kitchen hand at Fishwives in Surry Hills. A year later he was introduced to Sydney chef Tony Bilson, who was looking for a Japanese cook to make sushi at Kinsela’s. It was at Kinsela’s that Tetsuya learned classical French techniques, thus forming the beginnings of his own style of cooking, marrying the French technique with the Japanese philosophy of using natural, seasonal flavours.
Tetsuya left Kinsela’s in 1983 and, in partnership with the head waiter, opened Ultimo’s. In 1989, he went on to open his own restaurant, Tetsuya’s, on a small site in the Sydney suburb of Rozelle. Relocating to the CBD in November 2000, Tetsuya refurbished the heritage-listed site at 529 Kent St to create his dream restaurant, complete with dining rooms overlooking an exquisite Japanese garden.
His contribution to Australia society was recognised in 2005 with the Medal of the Order of Australia, given to Tetsuya in recognition of his “service to the community and the development of Australian cuisine as a chef, restaurateur and author, to vocational training, and to support for charitable groups.”
Tetsuya is proud to promote the traditions and cuisine of Japan, and was honoured to be selected as the Japanese sake industry’s first overseas Sake Samurai (or ambassador) in 2006.
In addition to the restaurant, Tetsuya has introduced some of his most loved and admired recipes to kitchen and book shelves across the globe, with his cookbook Tetsuya, and expanding range of gourmet products.
Over the course of his career, Tetsuya has won acclaim not only in Australia, but also internationally. Restaurant Tetsuya’s featured in The World’s 50 Best Restaurants from the list’s inception in 2002 through to 2013, and Tetsuya has earned international recognition as one of the world’s great chefs, acknowledged by his peers, the media, and diners around the globe.
In 2010, Tetsuya embarked upon an exciting culinary venture in Singapore. His restaurant, Waku Ghin, is located in the spectacular Marina Bay Sands complex, and has received the same exceptional reviews as Tetsuya continues to enjoy for his eponymous restaurant in Sydney.
In late 2013 he was honoured by the Japanese government, as the first ever internationally based chef to be recognised as one of Japan’s Master of Cuisine.
2016 marked chef Tetsuya’s first Michelin Star, with Waku Ghin being recognised in Singapore’s first Michelin Guide. He was further honoured by Relais & Chateaux as the recipient of the annual Chefs Trophy 2017, a mark of great respect from his peers. In 2017, he received Two Michelin Stars for Waku Ghin from the Michelin Guide in Singapore, an honour he said he shared with his whole team.
“Tetsuya is part of an elite group of international chefs that has influenced other chefs through their personal styles and unique approaches to food. His culinary philosophy centres on pure, clean flavours that are decisive, yet completely refined. His amazing technique, Asian heritage, sincere humility, worldwide travels and insatiable curiosity combine to create incredible, soulful dishes that exude passion in every bite.” – Charlie Trotter.

The service was exquisite from the time we entered to leaving. The experience was a journey from the sea to the land starting off with seafood and finishing off with full blood wagyu and then dessert. My top picks were the starter oysters and the sourdough bread / truffle butter. I would recommend loading up on the butter because it is that damn good! I thought the other dishes we well-constructed with their own unique textures. Would recommend for special occasions as a one time experience. 8 out of 10 for me.

Tetsuya’s is an institution and rightfully so. The reviews about the restaurant are varied but given that the restaurant is closing in August, we decided to give it a go. The first few dishes were really good. True to their reviews, the restaurant respects their ingredients and make the seafood shine. My favourite was the Hiramasa Kingfish closely followed by their famous Confit of Tasmanian Ocean trout with salad of apple and wittlof. I thought the bangalow sweet pork and wagyu was just ok. It’s tasty but not incredible. We absolutely loved their bread with the truffle butter. Yum! What stands out aside from the food is their customer service- impeccable! Manuel was delightful. Overall, we had a good night where we felt special due to the excellent customer service and enjoyed tasty treats. Is the hefty price tag worth it? I’m not too sure… I might just come back to make a decision 😜

Amazing dining experience with my friend. All the dishes were on point and service was lovely. Love the ocean trout dish the most!

There are so many elements that make up every single one of these dishes. The oysters were amazing and so was the bread. The trout and pork were also very enjoyable. Staff were attentive and service was amazing just as you’d expect. The interior of the restaurant seems kind of dated to be honest. Could do with a furniture/interior revamp. Also there is parking available for customers at the restaurant if you plan to drive in.

Somehow delicate food, tasty and nicely garnished; but underwhelmed this time! However, they still deserve 5 stars, great service and delicious food. My favourite is the pork belly if I didn’t remember it wrong! We have been a couple of times, unfortunately we heard they are closing down! Let’s hope that’s just a rumour

I had initially contacted the restaurant in January 2022 to book a table for March 2022, but unfortunately, they were fully booked. I tried again in September 2022 and finally confirmed a booking for March 2023. I was excited to celebrate my wedding anniversary here, but unfortunately, the experience was very disappointing. Pros: - The restaurant is located in a beautiful house with a lovely Japanese backyard/landscape. - On-site parking was available only for $25, which was very convenient. - Our waitress, Lin/Lynn, paid attention to detail, had excellent knowledge of the wine, and knew each dish well. - The bread was the highlight of the night and was better than any of the dishes we had. They even offered us an extra basket of bread, which was a nice touch. - The yuzu white chocolate was the second favourite Cons: - The waiters were not very friendly , not warm , there was a moment I was still enjoying the truffle butter bread which was the most amazing dish for the night , I had about a quarter of bread on my hand and I was still chewing , the waiter came and moved away my plate , presented the next course . I was shocked to be honest - The food was average and nothing was extraordinary , everything could have been better but I don’t really remember anything while writting this review - The signature dish was the biggest disappointment. The first bite reminded me of the powder from Nissan Instant Noodle with a seafood flavor. I have dined at more expensive restaurants with mind-blowing experiences and less expensive restaurants with much better quality. This restaurant was not worth the wait, and I am unlikely to return.

Managed to get a booking at Tetsuya before they moved locations. Really enjoyed the beautiful garden view. The food was very well presented and a delightful experience for the taste buds. The sitting was a little longer than we'd hoped (3.5hrs) with a bit too much time between each course. The service was friendly but it did feel a little not genuine. But overall, it was a decent experience and I'm glad we got to try it.

My recent visit to t...
My recent visit to this restaurant was far from satisfactory. To begin with, we were seated in one of their private rooms, which resembled a dreary office meeting space rather than an inviting dining area, the lack of ambiance was disheartening, with no music or any attempt to create a pleasant atmosphere. In an effort to improve the situation, I approached one of the waiters and requested some background music. However, their response was disappointing as they stated they were unable to provide any, suggesting that we play music from our own phones instead! While the oysters were undeniably impressive, it's worth mentioning that they came at an additional cost and were not included in the already overpriced set menu. The food, although decent, failed to reach the level of excellence one would expect at such prices. The wine pairing was very good but nothing extraordinary. What truly left a sour taste in my mouth was the exorbitant amount we paid—close to $700 per person. Regrettably, the experience did not warrant such a steep price tag. If you're looking for a restaurant that offers a truly culinary experience, I would strongly recommend exploring other options that provide a more enjoyable ambiance, or even breathtaking views. The overall experience fell short of justifying the exorbitant price tag. If you're searching for a truly memorable dining experience that offers both quality and value, I strongly recommend exploring alternative establishments.

Returned over the years and remained at a high standard when it comes to food and service. The ocean trout is a signature for a reason, however the other dishes are no pushovers. The airy truffle butter is hectic.
